The "Infamous" New Jersey Turnpike Bust! |
From what I hear by those familier Jerry's magic silver box of wonder drugs confiscated that day in 1973 by the New Jersey State Police also included, and what to many close friends was a shock, a portion of H, which had not really begun to make cirles yet in the community, and so begs the question how early did Jerry start in? Here, we have some evidence as early as Spring 1973... You hear plenty about the late 70's and 80's, but I am betting things began to pick up rather early. You can only do so much acid...

I think it was in Phils book that he says he discovered H during the Hiatus. Also Sam Cutler told me that Jerry never did H to his knowledge while he was tour manager which would seem to confirm that time frame.

I am quite surprised but not overly so...
Do you when cocaine became a regular part of the scene? I have been curious about that in relation to the musical development of the early 70's...

I seem to remember reading that he first got into opiates on a European tour, my guess is 72. It's been a long time since I read the various Garcia memoirs and GD tell all books. Maybe that will jog someone's brain.

Every thing I ever heard was that he was introduced to the persian sometime during the long process of working on the GD movie. That would put it sometime between Nov. '74 and June '77.
